Growing up I was a collector of Black Holiday Barbies. I had about 30 mint condition Black Barbies in entirety, ranging from the early 90s to the early 2000s. I was instructed to never open them because one day they would be worth something. In the time where I needed them most they meant the world. Being able to call myself a black woman is a unique experience that’s exclusive to the ones that have the privilege. Holding that title comes with its looming societal pressures. So something felt good to librarate those black barbies from their box and cut their hair. The time I needed encouragement and support the most, it's always been a black woman there to aid. My God is a black woman. I see us as celestial beings that move in compassion, sheer love, and radiance.
